Carry On Tuesday Plus # 164

The nursery rhyme ‘Rain rain go away’ is said to date back to the reign of the English Tudor monarch Queen Elizabeth 1 (1533-1603) During that time there was great rivalry between Spain and England culminating in the launch of the Spanish Armada in 1588.  130 ships set sail to invade England but they were defeated by the English with the help of stormy weather!

The original rhyme went

Rain rain go away
Come again another day,
Little Johnny wants to play,
Rain rain go to Spain,
Never show your face again!
